You say: "After just one day he thought he was going insane. Symptoms: intense boredom, aching, agitation, restlessness, escapism. All the signs, in fact, of a Headmind that was about to explode with frustration."

Aren't symptoms from Bodymind. Shouldn't he have just listened to them and left the retreat then and there? How did he end up in a place of connection to bodymind by at first ignoring it?

John Eaton

Hi Callum. Frustration was triggered by Headmind resisting the situation and clamouring to be elsewhere. Bodymind then calls for HM to stop doing that. It's not the same as frustration that is triggered by external events.

Joanne

That honestly doesn't make sense to me. Isn't his bodymind creating symptoms to encourage him to change his behavior. Boredom and restlessness seem like bodymind symptoms that want him to try something new. And how is it not an external event?? He's sitting completely still in a room for hours. This doesn't fit with everything else I've read about bodymind.

Dr John Eaton

Hi Joanne

We need to make a distinction here between the External environment (e.g. conflict, disrespect, loss, danger, abuse, etc) and the Internal environment (created by Headmind worry, perfectionism, guilt, procrastination or - in this case - the 'Chatterbox' working overtime and creating tension). See my previous reply to Callum. Bodymind thereupon creates frustration to push the individual not to run away from his Retreat but to refocus Headmind on present-moment awareness.
