Brain research on anorexic women has shown up an interesting difference in the way their minds work.
It appears that anorexics are far more focused on making plans, getting things right, getting things perfect, than the rest of us. They worry more and obsess more. They also have trouble in living in the moment, finding it difficult to let go of mistakes, while also worrying about future consequences.
The obsession with getting it right (in this case, their weight) gradually diminishes the capacity for pleasure. By degrees, existence becomes a joyless cycle of obsession. - and weight loss.
On this evidence the correct treatment for anorexia nervosa would be to a) decrease the amount of time spent on worry, perfectionism and planning, b) teaching the individual how to develop awareness in the moment, and c) diverting attention to new activities that trigger an increase in pleasure (making anorexic behavior less interesting).
Could Reverse Therapy reverse Anorexia? It could be interesting to find out.
