A reader wants to know why I wrote about hypnosis the other day while at the same time arguing that there is no Unconscious Mind. I was actually writing about how words create trance states and warning people to be careful about the language they used. You can read that blog again here.
I don't use hypnosis any more. First, because it involves a lot of hocus-pocus, second, because it takes power away from clients and, third, because people don't need it to give themselves suggestions. And I don't believe in The Unconscious Mind for the simple reason that it doesn't exist. You have a Conscious Mind and you have Bodymind. That's it.
Trance states are part of basic human experience and anyone can use them. They are just experiences in which you have a narrow focus of awareness. You can be in trance when you are listening to music or watching a film. You can create negative trance states by focusing solely on one of your worries. You can create useful trance states by narrowing down your attention on experiences you want to have. The more you do that the more likely you will have that experience, provided you make the description realistic enough and it plugs into your desires.
The reason pre-recorded tapes work for some people (but not all) depends, mostly, on how powerful the suggestions on the tape are. Their power depends on how well they activate your imagination so that you clearly and precise lay down a blueprint for your actions in the future. It has nothing to do with the unconscious mind - these tapes work on conscious projection. They may also include relaxation techniques that provide a feel-good factor - which reinforces the listener's belief in what can happen next.
All feedback gratefully received. What are your experiences using these tapes?
